QUESTIONS FOR “GENISM AND THE PROSPECT OF GENETIC SUICIDE”
BY GEORGE ANNAS
PREPARED FOR PRESENTATION AT UNESCO 21st CENTURY TALKS:
The New Aspect of Racism in the Age of Globalization and the Gene Revolution at the world Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, Durban, South Africa, September 3, 2001.
1. Describe Annas’ definition of “Racism”, “Genism” and “Genetic Genocide”
Annas defines racism as superficial perceptions of each other, he then states that it is “the theory that distinctive human characteristics and abilities are determined by race”. On the other hand “Genism” is the theory that genes determine distinctive human characteristics and abilities.
Genetic Genocide refers to genocide based on genetic differences; species-altering genetic engineering could be a potential weapon of mass destruction, and makes the unaccountable genetic engineer a potential bioterrorist.
2.How could a project like the “Human Genome Diversity Project” (HGDP) lead to genism?
Projects like HGDP could definitely lead to genism in numerous ways. If science finds a certain gene pool that they may feel is “inferior“ similar to the same reasons of racism, the door to discrimination and possible elimination is wide open. Also, if the genes of indigenous tribes are cloned, I find it very hard to believe that these tribes would allow methods of modern science to interfere with their culture. On the other hand how about endangered ethnic groups, “vanishing tribes; if we preserve their gene pool by cloning, it may seem like we are helping them, but again there is a question of interring with natures natural process of elimination.
3.Can you think of any benefits the HGDP might have?
Endangered people could learn about science and let them make a choice for themselves if they want to except these modern theories and apply them. The awareness of one’s genetic make up can be helpful by letting people maintain their health through diet and informing them about their rights as humans concerning freedom, social, and cultural integration.
4.Who should be, in your opinion, be responsible for regulating and controlling genetic and genomic science projects?
Every one of all race, origin, and social class should have access to information about science because it is everyone’s right to have at least an understanding of what genome projects are, therefore I think inevitably the people will be in control of regulation. Also, because it is the freedom of the people, we should also be the ones to financially support such projects.

Beware of artists - we mix with all classes of society and are therefore most dangerous.
